Art Therapy with Children

• Programs are planned with close attention to each child’s individual needs as observed and discussed with the primary caregivers.

• We combine Child Centered Play Therapy approaches with Art Therapy, with young children, as they have a natural affinity to play & creativity.

• The therapist prioritizes creating a close therapeutic relationship, in a space where safety is assured.

• In this environment, the child is encouraged to express their true feelings, learn emotional regulation skills, and develop emotional literacy.

• They have every opportunity to be creative, to practice social communication skills, to know behavioral boundaries and gain mastery of materials by exercising physical skills, and exploring how materials behave through play.

• Through these processes, children develop an intrinsic strengthening of the self, by way of making choices, creating independently, working collaboratively, experiencing challenges and finding solutions.

• Art Therapy can also awaken curiosity, wonder and awe, through colour, form, story, & imagination.

• It is a strength- based approach and is particularly beneficial for neurodivergent children as uniqueness is valued.  

• Those who come with traumatic experiences, can find ways to explore and express what happened through powerful metaphors, whether it be working with clay, guided fantasies, or making sand tray scenes, and experience healing in a safe space with the therapist.
